International Experience Canada (IEC)

The International Experience Canada (IEC) program is one of the most accessible and exciting ways for young professionals to experience life in Canada.

This pathway bridges adventure and opportunity by allowing you to explore Canada while building international career experience. If you’re eligible, it’s a smart way to gain Canadian work experience and begin a foundation for long-term residency if this is what you are interested in.

International Experience Canada (IEC)

Who Can Apply?

The IEC program is open to young adults from over 35 participating countries that have agreements with Canada. These agreements make it easier for young adults aged 18 to 35 (or sometimes 18 to 30, depending on the country) to get work permits for up to two years. The program is divided into three categories: Working Holiday, Young Professionals, and International Co-op (Internship). Each category caters to a different type of experience, from casual jobs to structured professional placements.

Canada’s immigration policies in 2024 are shifting toward stricter controls on temporary workers, but the IEC remains a reliable option for young professionals. It’s LMIA-exempt, which means employers don’t need to jump through hoops to hire you. That alone makes it an attractive option for both you and Canadian companies, especially in industries like tourism, tech, and healthcare.

Canada also uses the IEC pools and draw system, which feels a bit like applying for a visa lottery. After submitting your profile, you wait to receive an invitation to apply, and draws happen regularly based on country quotas. The process is competitive but fair, and having clear, well-prepared documentation is essential to increase your chances.
