If you’re a Canadian professional looking for work opportunities in the U.S., the TN visa is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to get started.
Under the United States–Canada–Mexico Agreement (USCMA) (formerly NAFTA), Canadians can apply for a TN visa directly at the border without lengthy government approvals or lotteries.
Here’s everything you need to know about how the TN visa works, who qualifies, and how to apply.
What Is the TN Visa?
The TN visa is a special U.S. work visa for Canadian and Mexican citizens under CUSMA. It allows professionals in certain listed occupations to work temporarily in the U.S.
- No annual cap or lottery
- Canadians can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry (land border or preclearance airport)
- Valid for up to 3 years and renewable indefinitely
- Lower cost and faster processing than most U.S. work visas
Who Qualifies for a TN Visa?
To qualify, you must:
- Be a citizen of Canada or Mexico (permanent residents are not eligible)
- Have a job offer from a U.S. employer in one of the CUSMA-listed professions
- Meet the minimum education or licensing requirements for that profession
- Intend to work temporarily (no immigrant intent)What are TN-listed professions?
There are over 60 qualifying occupations, including:
- Accountants- Engineers
- Management Consultants- Scientific Technicians/Technologists
- Computer Systems Analysts
- Medical professionals (e.g., nurses, dentists, dietitians)- Teachers and professors
Each profession has specific educational requirements (e.g., a degree or license).
How Is the TN Different for Canadians vs. Mexicans?
- Canadians: Can apply directly at the border or preclearance airport—no need for a prior visa.- Mexicans: Must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate before entering.
This makes the TN especially attractive for Canadians because it’s fast and simple.
How Canadians Apply for a TN Visa
Step 1: Get a U.S. Job Offer
The offer must be for a CUSMA-listed profession and specify job title, duties, salary, and duration.
Step 2: Prepare Required Documents
- Proof of Canadian citizenship (passport)
- Detailed employer support letter describing the position, duties, and how it meets TN requirements
- Credentials evaluation (degree, license, or proof of experience as required)
- Any required professional licenses
Step 3: Apply at the Border
- Go to a U.S. port of entry or preclearance airport
- Present your documents to CBP- Pay the processing fee (around $50–60)
- If approved, CBP issues TN status on the spot
How Long Is TN Status Valid?
- Initial TN status can be granted for up to 3 years
- Renewals are also up to 3 years and can be done indefinitely as long as the job remains temporary in nature
There’s no limit to how many times you can renew, but CBP may question repeated renewals that look permanent.
Can You Bring Family on a TN Visa?
Yes, your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can accompany you in TD (Trade Dependent) status – however – TD dependents cannot work in the U.S., but can attend school
Limitations of the TN Visa
While the TN visa is fast and affordable, it has limitations:
- No dual intent → You must intend to work temporarily, not immigrate permanently
- Not eligible for a direct green card transition without changing status
- Must stay within the specific job/profession listed in your application
If your long-term goal is a green card, you may eventually need to transition to an H‑1B, L‑1, or employer-sponsored green card.
Why the TN Visa Is the Fastest for Canadians
For many Canadian professionals, the TN is the quickest way to start working in the U.S. legally.
No USCIS petition required
No lottery or annual cap
Same-day processing at the border
Low cost compared to other visas
